B. Arch. Degree is enough if you want to practice as an architect.
Why M. Arch.? Most do it because they want to teach and continue in academic pursuit.
The truth is that a kind of upgrade and update of knowledge is essential after dabbling for a few years in professional practice. Ideally a Master’s degree should be pursued after couple of years of practice.
In fact it must be pursued.
In practice there is learning on a day to day basis, from client to client, project to project. But that learning is of a different kind which teaches you to be exact, to the point and in simple terms- practical, about execution and satisfactory completion of a project.
In practice there is hardly any time to pause, muse over the theoretical context of the projects being handled. There is a lot of dependence on standards. Research, if any is confined to reinforcing the theme or concept of the design germinating in the mind, and all efforts are focussed towards making the idea work, rather than critically analyzing the myriads of possibilities. It is here that a ‘Masterly’ approach towards problem solving is desirable.
How does one become a Master? They say practice makes a man perfect, for that matter a woman too. Yes, architectural practice can make an architect a Master... provided each work and its context are articulated to contribute to the domain of architectural design. With years of practice few chosen ones are addressed by the society as Master architects.
But to become a Master of Architecture you need to set aside practice and delve into philosophical articulation of various aspects and theories of design, environmental contexts, continuity of traditions of design and building, social, economic, cultural forces that shape form, and organize function and circulation, which are the three integral aspects of architectural design.
Though ‘Architecture is thoughtful making of spaces’ (-Louis Kahn), it becomes meaningful only on completion and occupation, over a period of time.
To become a Master in Architecture one has to research this ‘meaningfulness’.
